Best Employers Award for 50 Plus Canadians

Best employers awardDoes your company have what it takes to win a 2012 Best Employers Award for 50 Plus Canadians™?

Now in its 6th year, the Best Employers Award for 50 Plus Canadians™ (BEA) competition rewards companies that lead the way in creating best practices for engaging 50 plus workers.

Why?

The Workplace Institute encourages companies to set the standard in addressing workplace issues with 50-plus workers. Developing new ways to retain and attract mature employees is a priority for smart organizations who wish to be viewed as top employers in their field.

We believe in celebrating good news stories about companies that introduced new programs for their KAA-Boomer employees (aged 50-plus) that benefited the entire organization.

The BEA recognizes great practices in a wide number of categories:

  • career development
  • retention
  • recruitment
  • workplace culture/practices
  • management practices
  • health support
  • retirement/retiree practices
  • benefits
  • pensions
  • recognition

In 2007, we created a new category to recognize the unique challenges for small businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

Need a bit of convincing?

Brilliant managers know that the Best Employers Award for 50 Plus Canadians really mean something to prospective candidates. Just ask Darrell Lang from Bethany Care Society. When Bethany won the Best Employers Award and began adding the award as part of their recruitment ads they started getting the kinds of resumes they had been looking for all along, candidates with significant experience who brought well developed skills to the organization.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. More than 10 employees
  2. In business for more than 3 years
  3. All business, not-for-profit, academic, labour, and government organizations are welcome to apply
  4. Individual units within a larger organization are welcome to apply separately

Our judges score each application on the following basis:

  • description of the program/idea/initiative
  • rationale
  • responsiveness to needs of the 50-plus worker or organization
  • innovation
  • quality
  • effectiveness of the initiative as measured by positive change and measurable results

An organization’s application may focus on one great thing it does to meet the needs of its 50-plus workforce in any one category, or on many little things in several categories that add up to make it a great place to work for the mature employee.

Often HR policies implemented for the whole organization are especially appreciated by its 50-plus workers.

Policies do not need to be specifically directed at 50-plus workers to be included in the application, but should be shown to be valued by 50-plus workers in the organization.
